The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the body’s most complex joints, connecting the mandible (jawbone) to the skull and enabling the movements necessary for chewing (mastication), speaking, and facial expressions. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) occur when this joint or the surrounding muscles do not function correctly, causing pain and discomfort.

Main Symptoms of TMD

1. Pain in the temporomandibular joint Discomfort may be felt in front of the ear, especially during chewing or speaking. This pain often arises due to an incorrect jaw position or constant tension exerted on the joint.

2. Joint noises Clicking or popping sounds when opening the mouth may indicate joint dysfunction. This usually occurs when the articular disc does not move synchronously with the mandibular condyle.

3. Limited mouth opening Difficulty in fully opening the mouth, with or without pain, can signal inflammation or a partial blockage in the TMJ, requiring evaluation to prevent worsening.

4. Jaw tension and headaches Constant clenching of the muscles involved in mastication, frequently caused by bruxism or an unbalanced bite, can lead to headaches and chronic muscle fatigue.

5. Accentuated tooth wear or filling fractures Teeth that do not meet correctly can suffer excessive wear or lead to the fracture of dental fillings. Unbalanced forces on the teeth eventually cause dental sensitivity and the need for complex treatments.

Common Causes of Temporomandibular Disorders

  • Incorrect jaw position

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching)

  • Trauma to the jaw

  • Unbalanced bite or uneven tooth wear

  • Stress and chronic muscle tension

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Early detection of TMD can prevent complications such as chronic pain, accentuated tooth wear, or permanent limitation of jaw movement. Treatment may include:

  • Correcting the bite and dental alignment

  • Therapy for relaxing the jaw muscles

  • Night guards for bruxism

  • Recommendations for reducing stress and muscle tension

Temporomandibular disorders can affect the quality of life, causing pain, muscle fatigue, and dental problems. If you notice any of the mentioned symptoms, a specialist evaluation can prevent worsening and help maintain joint and dental health.
